About Plant Asset Management:

The market for plant asset management (PAM), sometimes referred to as Manufacturing Asset Management (MAM) is projected to grow from $5.5 billion in 2019 to $9.4 billion by 2024, compounded growth rate of over 11% annually.

The underlying idea behind Plant Asset Management is to create a single digital instance of the entire manufacturing infrastructure and to then use this digital model for all decision making processes across departments, where possible automating decision making through the application of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning technologies.

Plant asset management covers all the assets in a manufacturing facility including all the machinery, parts, production lines, and buildings; it encompasses their entire decision making lifecycle including investment, disinvestment, and management.

Although Plant Asset Management focuses on physical assets, by injecting greater predictability into the business, it impacts all functions including human resources, financial planning, and sales. Asset management is all about reducing failures, extending asset lifecycle, streamlining operations, and increasing efficiencies across the plant.


  • Define the asset boundaries: Decide which assets will be covered by the system. We may wish to start with a subset of assets, the management of which will yield the quickest benefits and may help secure buy-in from the team.
  • Gather data: Asset management requires data to be collected from IIOT devices, sensors, and from manual surveys (this data has to be fed in). All this data needs to be streamed and collected for analysis and further action.
  • Establish the IT infrastructure: The current IT infrastructure has to be studied and augmented as required to use and action the data effectively.
  • Training: Effective asset management is part of a quality culture that focuses on continuous improvement. Therefore the key to successful implementation is creating awareness amongst employees of the need for Asset Management and training them properly so that they experience and feel the benefits themselves. Asset Management, implemented correctly, reduces drudgery and moves people into value-added activities.
